Overview of Green Shoes: Burningman 2007
The Green Dot/Green Shoes, is a light pulsing, interactive, educational soundscape.
As participants pass through an aural veil of chorus frog voices they are
detected by motion sensors within the interior field of hundreds of pulse-luminous
shoes. The chorus frog voices quiet at the approach of the viewer, and as
they are sensed by a pair of shoes, the pair of shoes lights and glows for
several moments, a sound begins to play .
The shoes play sounds from the realms of the world: marine, terra, and the interior world: water, animal noises, bird calls, breath and heart beats. An overlapping aural map of the world pulses into life and dissipates with the passage of each visitor. To walk through the field of luminous shoes is to interact directly with the sounds of the planet, to create a personal light and sound expression of the environment.
The trail of each participant remains glowing for a few moments, then fades, until touched off by another movement.

Click to hear "GS ProtoEnvironment"
a sound mock up mixing the central hub "heart beat" with individual
sounds from the shoe units: what it may sound like from inside. (Created by

Solar Power
The installation will operate using low power LED lights powered by an array
of 350 amp, 12 volt batteries. The batteries will be charged by a series of
solar panels.

The Playa
More work, and storms, and trenches to dig, and finally... light and sound.
The light trails in the lower picture were made by the lights of viewers as
they passed through the field, the shutter speed of this shot was too slow
to capture anything more than the lights the visitors carried with them.

Clean up
More dust, more wind, more rain... until at last it was done.
